The Pastor’s Job Description is Chief Vermin Catcher

A pastor I know recently wrote these words:

“Around 95% of my job is conflict based and reconciliation driven!  Other things I do: I write a 20-page paper every week and recite it, by memory in front of tons and tons of people, I manage a massive organization, I counsel the broken-hearted, I marry and bury, I deal with the most ridiculous emails too.”

One pastor included this list in their responsibilities:

Turning on the heat/AC

Locking/unlocking doors

Vacuuming floors

Taking out trash/recycling

Creating bulletins

Another pastor even included “catching vermin” on their list.

How similar are these descriptions to your job?  Maybe it isn’t entirely similar to your ministry, but I bet a lot of it is pretty close.

Then, this telling statistic from Pastor Care Inc.:  Only 1 in 10 pastors will retire as a pastor.  9 out of 10 will go on to other jobs.

Whew.  Don’t let this beat you up.  It may affirm your weariness, but don’t let it take you down.  Remember the promises of Philippians 3:

12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. 16 Only let us hold true to what we have attained.
