90% of Pastors Will Leave the Ministry Early - Do You Have a Plan?

In seminary, pastors study theology.

Some get training in leadership, and others, receive training in church management.

If you plant a church, gathering and vision casting are thrown in.

But there is one area where training is rarely offered…leaving the ministry.

There are really three options for leaving the ministry.

A few pastors leave at a nice old age, but not many.  Pastoral Care Inc. reports that only 10% retire as a minister.

Some exit with the goal of growing financial stability in the latter part of their life.

And some leave broke, broken, and bitter.

Apart from a church or denomination with an amazing retirement plan, most pastors are left with options 2 or 3.

With the pace and demand of pastoral life, how does a pastor even begin to make plans to leave ministry?  Hear me; I’m not even talking investments and IRA’s.  I’m talking about things like what you will do for a living, where you will live, and where you will attend church.

At the end of 2020, I peacefully stepped away from the church I planted and transitioned into a full-time marketing career and pastoral coaching.  The process wasn’t easy, but we are doing well as a family, our church is comfortable financially, and they are looking for another pastor.

I am immensely blessed.  It wasn’t easy, but I am glad I made the transition.

Are you interested in a coaching plan that will help you develop your post-ministerial career?  90% of pastors will make this transition before retirement age, and coaching just might help.  We would love to be there for you.  We will serve you affordably and confidentially.  We know the steps to take and the mistakes to avoid.
