Preaching Through the Dog Days of Winter

The dog days of winter are here.

The east coast is hearing predictions of 14 to 20 inches of snow.  That’s after lots of snow and ice the past two weekends.

This winter seems to be a bit worse than usual, so coupling that with the stress of Covid-19 and post-election worries, seasonal depression and overall “down in the dump” attitudes are prevalent.

What should the church do about it?

Well, the tides of our preaching shouldn’t rise and fall with the weather, that’s for sure.  However, if you are at an intersection deciding what to preach next, here are a few ideas.

One:  Pick a book of the Bible with an overall encouraging theme.

Two:  Remind yourself to always preach the hope of Christ.

Three:  Take care of your own mental and spiritual health amid all your hard work.  Pursue healthy practices yourself.  Your flock and family need you.

Spring is not far away, but not everyone feels better once the sun comes out.  The groundwork you lay now as a pastor, however, will go a long way to help many of your people grow and be healthy in the spring.

Remember, friends, Jesus is mighty to save and an ever-present hope for you and me.  God is well pleased with your perseverance.

Please know we are praying for you.
